Welcoming Adults Into our Faith: Order of Christian Initiation for Adults
What is OCIA?
OCIA (formerly known as RCIA) is the process by which we welcome adults and children above the age of seven into full participation in the Catholic Church. Participants in this program prepare through several months of study, usually starting in September, and receive the Sacraments of Initiation, (Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation), at the Easter Vigil Mass. Each individual's situation is unique and the process may take more time as circumstances dictate.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops describes the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults as a process in which participants “undergo…conversion as they study the Gospel, profess faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church, and receive the sacraments."
The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults refers to the process of becoming Catholic. The purpose of the classes is to educate those who are discerning whether or not to be Catholic. Our goal is not to get one to become Catholic; that is the job of the Holy Spirit. Our job is simply to educate those who are considering God’s call to learn more about Him and His Church. Each participant will have a sponsor; someone to help guide them along the process and be a support to answer questions and walk with them on this journey. Individuals who responded to God’s call to become Catholic will be brought into the Church during the Easter weekend.
